The design of the Okiru alarm clock by Japanese designer Kazushige Miyake is deliberately simple and understated. In Japanese, okiru means "to wake up." Since the alarm clock is often the first thing you see when you wake up, the designer wanted to create a simple, functional object that would allow for a peaceful start to the day.
The design blends function and color. The alarm is set using a dial on the back of the clock and is the same color as the clock's alarm indicator and the prong that protrudes when the alarm is set. The alarm is silent and has a snooze function that is activated by lightly touching the clock. The same light touch can activate a dim light at any time, allowing you to tell the time at night.
